What do hormones do to your skin

Your skin during a tidal wave of hormones

As a woman, this problem is most likely familiar to you. Getting acne around your last period. This has to do with the different hormones in your body.

We have listed the hormones that cause acne during the menstruation:

Progesterone and Testosterone: These hormones are the cause of oily skin. They ensure that your skin produces more sebum. This is the reason why your skin is oilier. Your testosterone level is at its highest around your period. This is also the reason why you suffer more from acne.

Estrogen: This hormone keeps your skin thick and flexible. As the years go by, the estrogen level decreases. Estrogen also ensures that your skin can retain moisture well because it ensures the production of hyaluronic acid in your skin. During your period, your estrogen level is also lower, which can make your skin feel a little drier.

Cortisol: This hormone is also called the stress hormone. High cortisol levels make your skin more sensitive, but also cause your skin to age faster. Nobody wants that! In contrast to the other hormones, you can influence your cortisol level: by regularly take a break for relaxation and exercising a lot.
